Description

WW2 East Bros Australian Commando Knife made in Sydney, Australia. Original Goldseal 1942-dated leather scabbard included; scarce type in very good overall condition, considering the age

Rare WW2 era fighting knife manufactured for the US and Australian military by East Bros in Sydney, Australia. This is a so-called Australian Commando Knife – this type is pretty hard to find nowadays. The Commando Knife was designed by Australian Whittingslowe Engineering during the war. Several manufacturers, including East Bros, had produced the knife till 1945. See the scan of the original circa 1944 Whittingslowe Engineering ad attached (the scan is for reference only; the ad print is not included with the lot). This exact type is illustrated on pages 55-56 of the KNIVES OF THE UNITED STATES MILITARY WORLD WAR II book by Michael W Silvey – a well-established expert an author of many books on the subject of US military edged weapons (see the book’s page scan attached).

This Australian Commando is used, but it is in great overall condition – no edge nicks or hammer marks on the spine; saber-point high carbon steel blade has been re-sharpened but not harshly; the tip is intact. East Bros manufacturing stamp EAST BROS / SYDNEY  is sharply struck at ricasso.  Original wood handle grips with 3 iron pins and the extra-wide iron guard; all parts are tight with no play.  This fighting knife is about 11-1/4″ / 28.5 cm overall; the blade is about 6-1/8″ / 15.5 cm long. Original leather scabbard with the standard-issue metal wire belt hanger was made by Goldseal in Sydney, Australia. Australian military “broad arrow” acceptance stamp, manufacturing stamp GOLDSEAL / 1942 / SYDNEY, and inspector’s initials H.B on the back. All original rivers and stitching are intact; the keeper is damaged but could be replaced if needed. These Aussie scabbards are actually more scarce than the knives as most did not fare well in the jungle environment; very few survived the war. This scarce WW2 East Bros Australian Commando Knife and its original scabbard have not been cleaned or tampered with in any way; the set is in 100% original “as is” condition. These are the actual photos; spent brass and Aussie Sixpence are not is not included with the lot 😉

Almost 80 years after it was made this rare WW2 East Bros Australian Commando Knife is is in 100% serviceable condition still. This type is hard to find in any condition these days – don’t miss your chance to add it to your collection!
