Description

WW2 Collins Legitimus V44 Fighting Knife/ Air Force pilot bail-out survival knife in great overall condition, considering the age.

Scarce  WW2 era US Air Force model V44 pilot survival/fighting knife manufactured by Collins & Co. This type was issued to the USAF aircrews (and some Australian) as part of their survival kit during the war; V44 was an all-purpose knife for fighting and survival in case of a bail-out. This type is illustrated on pages 110-111 of KNIVES OF THE UNITED STATES MILITARY WORLD WAR II book by Michael W Silvey – a well-established expert an author of many books on the subject of US military edged weapons (see the book’s page scan in the photos).

This specimen is used but it is in better than average condition for the type – no nicks on the edge the handle is intact  without the typical ding marks on the pommel. The blade is stamped on ricasso COLLINS & Co. / “hand with hammer” logo / LEGITIMUS / MADE IN USA / No. 18; solid cast bronze cross-guard is unmarked. The guard has some casting imperfections on one side with greenish-brown  oxidation within the void. Black plastic handle with five large bronze pins is in excellent overall condition, considering the age – no chips or ding marks;  all parts are tight with no play. This huge knife is about 14″ / 35.5 cm overall; the blade is about 9-1/8″ / 23.2 cm long.  The scabbard did not survive.

This attractive WW2 Collins Legitimus V44 Fighting Knife has not been cleaned or tampered with in any way, it is in 100% original “as is” condition; these are the actual photos. I have a few more American WW2 era combat knives and bayonets, as well as several scarce WW1 and WW2 fighting daggers and trench knives from other countries available for sale – please take a look in our Militaria section.
