Description

WW2 CAMILLUS marlin spike knife USN M7085 Rosewood US Navy designation rope knife. One of the rarest US military WW-2 knives; only 38,148 made. Rare type in excellent overall condition, considering the age.

Very rare large WW2 era US Navy Marlin Spike Knife with 4″ marlin spike, 3-3/4″ blade, and rosewood handle scales, manufactured circa 1942 by CAMILLUS CUTLERY – one of the largest contributors of the edged weapons to the US military during the war. Designated by Camillus as “Pattern 7085 Rosewood“, only 38,148 M7085s were manufactured during the war, making it one of the toughest finds out of all standard-issue American WW2 knives. This knife type is illustrated in the U.S. MILITARY KNIVES; BOOK TWO published in 1973 by M. H. Cole – a well-established expert and the author of a number of books on the subject of the US military edged weapons (see the book’s scans attached).

This specimen is used, but it is in better than average overall condition for this type, considering the age and the every-day exposure to the elements in the open seas. Heavy-duty “marlin spike” is about 4” / 10.2 cm long; the tip in intact. Spike’s spring is extended to form a screwdriver on the end of the handle. The spike has just a tiny bit of a play when closed; it is nice and tight with no play when opened. Sheepfoot blade is about 3-3/4″ / 9.5 cm long; it has been very lightly sharpened, the tip is intact; the blade is tight. The tang is stamped CAMILLUS / CUTLERY CO. / CAMILLUS, N.Y. / U.S.A. Original jigged rosewood handle scales with steel bolsters & pins; original steel shackle is intact; all handle parts are tight; minor pitting on the blade is noted for accuracy. This large knife is about 5-1/4″ / 13.3 cm closed (from the end to the tip of a screwdriver).

Not very numerous to begin with, only a small fraction of these “marlin spike” knives survived the war – many were dropped overboard or went down with the ships. The heavy day-to-day use has undone most of the ohter knives remaining in service. Today most of the surviving “M7085 Rosewood” knives are in private collections & rarely come up for sale. Overall, this rare WW2 Camillus marlin spike M7085 Rosewood rope knife is in excellent condition; it is one of the hardest to find US military folders; don’t miss your chance to add it to your collection!

This rare WW2 CAMILLUS marlin spike knife USN M7085 Rosewood US Navy knife has not been cleaned or tampered with in any way. It is in 100% original “as is” condition; these are the actual photos.
