WW2 American Schrade paratrooper switchblade knife, VERY rare early Model 1 automatic with “clip saber tip” blade and jigged bone handle scales.
VERY rare early production 1st model of the famous WW2 era US Paratrooper Switchblade Knife; manufactured early in the war by SCHRADE CUTLERY. This is the almost impossible to find “large” Model 1 with jigged bone handle scales and long clip saber tip blade – one of the hardest to find standard-issue American WW2 knives. Exceedingly rare type; a later down-sized type that was mass-produced as a “small” Model 2 switchblade is illustrated on page 110 of THE COMPLETE BOOK OF U.S. MILITARY POCKET KNIVES published in 2015 by M. H. Cole – a well-established expert and the author of a number of books on the subject of the US military edged weapons (see the book’s scans attached).
The knife is used, but it is in much better than average condition for this type. The knife is about 5″ / 12.7 cm overall when closed; the blade is about 3-3/4” / 9.6 cm long; the saber clip tip is intact. The blade has a tiny bit of a play, but nothing serious. The edge is fine and very sharp still; the spring is nice & tight and works as intended. The blade lock is in perfect working order. The tang is stamped SCHRADE / CUT. CO. / WALDEN, N.Y. on one side and U.S. PATS. / DEC. 21,09. / SEPT. 13, 10. / JUNE 6, 16. on the other. Original jigged bone handle scales are simply beautiful with very attractive “dark amber” toning; no cracks, or repairs – VERY scarce this nice. One tiny surface chip at the handle’s base is noted for accuracy. Nickel-silver blade lock, push-button, bolsters, and pins; all handle parts are tight.
