Rare WW2 American Fighting Knife CASE PILOT KNIFE original sheath included – a so called “bail-out knife” issued to USAF air crews during World War II.
Rare American WW-2 era US Army/Navy Pilot survival/fighting knife by W.R. CASE & SONS CUTLERY COMPANY – this type was issued to the American air crews during the War as an all-purpose knife in case of a bail-out. W.R. Case & Sons Cutlery is one of the oldest American knife makers in a continues operation in the US. These CASE Pilot Knives are a lot more scarce than similar-purpose 5″ blade knives manufactured by Camillus. During the war only a small order of “pilot knives” was placed with Case Cutlery; a rare find in any condition these days. This type is illustrated on page 90 of the KNIVES OF THE UNITED STATES MILITARY WORLD WAR II book by Michael W Silvey – a well-established expert an author of many books on the subject of US military edged weapons (see the book’s page scan attached).
The knife shows only light signs of use; chrome-plated “blood grooves” blade has been gently re-sharpened; the tip is intact. Great condition overall, considering the age and abuse in the field. Ricasso is stamped with a large “square font” CASE logo. Stacked leather washers handle with red-n-black spacers and an aluminum “mushroom head” lead-sealed pommel. The handle is in great condition; all parts are tight with no play; bronze guard is slightly bent. The knife is about 9-1/2″ / 24 cm overall; the blade is about 5-1/16″ /12.9 cm long. Original war-time brown leather sheath is included. The sheath in in great overall condition; the keeper is nice and tight. Overall, this WW2 American Fighting Knife CASE PILOT KNIFE original sheath is in above average condition for the type. A rare type to begin with and super rare this nice; don’t miss your chance to add it to your collection!
