WW1 US Cavalry M1904 Lariat picket rope vintage American military-original mounted troops gear; exceedingly rare in unissued condition!
Rare pre-WW1 original US Army Model 1904 Cavalry Lariat commonly referred to as “M1904 Picket Rope”. Never considered common to begin with, this type has become exceedingly scarce, especially in “as made”, unissued condition. M-1904 lariat was one of the key pieces of the typical US Cavalry horse equipment. Issued to each mounted soldier it was meant to secure the horse when camped or grazing – just unroll and snap it to the standard-issue M1904 McClellan saddle. Attached is a reference photo of the field-loaded McClellan saddle with the M-1904 lariat attached (just an illustration; saddle is not included with the lariat, of course).
This picket rope is in unissued condition and still in the original roll, never having been uncoiled – just as it came from the arsenal storage; probably a surplus from Bannermans or H.K. White vaults. Steel rope clamps, link rings, snap hooks and bronze loop eyes all retain most of the original brown lacquer still with only minor loss of coating on the points of contact; only minimal storage wear is evident. The rope retains the high surface sheen only seen on those lariats in the best condition. VERY hard to find these days with some examples sold at $400 and up elsewhere. We have only one MWW1 US Cavalry M1904 Lariat picket rope vintage American military available; don’t miss a chance to add this rare item to your collection!
