WW1 DRGM Deutscher Brummer fighting knife 42er (42-cm Big Bertha gun) trench dagger type; original stag handle. Rare type in great overall condition, considering the age.
Original WW1 era “Deutscher Brummer” type Kampfmesser (close combat knife) manufactured circa 1914-1916. The blade is etched with the artillery shell / 42er on the top and Deutscher Brummer D.R.G.M. on bottom on one side of the blade. The acronym D.R.G.M. stands for Deutsches Reichsgebrauchsmuster – it means that the design was officially registered in the centralized Imperial registry (the “DRGM” registration had a 3-year term; it could be extended just once by another 3 years – this is 100% authentic WW1 era knife). The “42er” shell design refers to the huge German 42-cm (420-mm caliber) “Big Bertha” super-heavy artillery piece fielded and used by the German army with great success against the allied fortifications in Europe. See the attached photo of the actual gun in the photos – courtesy of Wikipedia. This exact fighting knife type is illustrated on pages 35-39 of the excellent French reference book titled Knives and Daggers-Bayonets Used by the German Army During 1914-1945 by Christian Mary (see the book’s page scan in the photos).
This fighting knife is in excellent overall condition for the type – no heavy pitting/rust, dings or nicks on the blade; the edge is very sharp still; the tip is intact. The dagger is about 11” / 28 cm overall; the blade is about 5-7/8” / 15 cm. The etching on one side of the blade had faded but it mostly readable still. Original European elk stag handle with an oval iron butt cap is nice and tight; all parts are solid with no play. There is no scabbard. This rare WW1 DRGM Deutscher Brummer fighting knife with a lot of character is in great overall condition, considering the age. Don’t miss your chance to add it to your collection!
This rare German WW1 DRGM Deutscher Brummer fighting knife has not been cleaned or tampered with in any way, it is in 100% original “as is” condition; these are the actual photos.
