Description

Vietnam War era TRU-BAL Bowie Axe fighting knife designed by Harry McEnvoy. Scarce “private purchase” type; excellent condition, considering the age.

Scarce circa 1960th-1970th Tru-Balance “Bowie-Axe” fighting knife in excellent overall condition. Tru-Bal Knives company was established in 1949 by Harry (Mac) McEnvoy – the legendary American pioneer in high-quality practical fighting knives. Early McEnvoy-made Tru-Bal knives are considered by many to be the finest knives in the world. McEnvoy wrote numerous books and articles on the subject and was elected to the American Knifemakers Guild Hall of Fame for his contributions to the knifemaking art. Interestingly, a lot of Tru-Bal knives were used in Vietnam during the war as “private purchase” fighting knives. McEnvoy even designed several models specifically for hand-to-hand fighting; all of them are super-hot collectibles today.  This exact type is illustrated on page 121 of KNIVES OF THE UNITED STATES MILITARY IN VIETNAM book by Michael W. Silvey – a well-established expert an author of many books on the subject of US military edged weapons (see the page’s photo attached).

The “Bowie-Axe” model was one of the heaviest knives manufactured by Tru-Bal. Most were used as intended; originals in better grades are pretty hard to find nowadays. This specimen is only slightly used, it is in better than average condition for the type. The edge has not been re-sharpened; a couple of tiny edge bumps are noted for accuracy. Solid full-tang construction; the knife was made of a specially-tempered spring steel; it is about 13-3/5”/ 34 cm overall; the blade is about 8-7/8”/ 22.5 cm long, about 5 mm thick. Ricasso is stamped with the famous Harry McEnvoy’s stone arrowhead symbol on both sides (it looks more like a fish, I know).  Black fiber handle scales are secured by 2 steel/brass pins; one side is initialed with a letter M. A few light surface rust spots are noted for accuracy – cleanable. There is no sheath.
