Description

WW2 EGW Waterman large American fighting knife, scarce “long” 7.5 inch blade type; original leather scabbard. Great overall condition, considering the age.

Original WW-2 era EGW “long blade” type fighting knife; manufactured during the war by E.G. Waterman Company in New York. EG Waterman Company made these sturdy private-purchase Fighters in order to satisfy the demand for the much-needed fighting knives early in the War. This type is illustrated on pages 114-115 of KNIVES OF THE UNITED STATES MILITARY WORLD WAR II book by Michael W Silvey – a well-established expert and the author of a number of books on the subject of the US military edged weapons (see book’s page scan attached).

This is a specimen with a more scarce “long” 7.5 inch blade; ricasso is factory-stamped with the classic up-side down E.G.W. KNIFE logo. These fighting knives were popular with the troops during the war; most of these knives were used as intended – in camps, trenches, and in combat. EGW’s high carbon steel blades kept a good edge but were prone to rust; relatively few survived the war in presentable condition. This knife is used, but in very good overall condition; the blade is not pitted and rust-free; the tip is intact; a few contact marks on the spine are noted for accuracy. Stacked leather washers handle with steel guard and pommel with a lanyard ring. All leather washers, pommel, and guard are tight with zero play. This knife is about 11-7/8″ / 30.2 cm from the tip to the lower tang; the blade is about 7-1/2″ / 19 cm. Original leather sheath is in great overall condition; the leather is still soft and supple; all stitching is intact. This old-timer is still in 100% serviceable condition, even after 75 years in retirement!

This attractive WW2 EGW Waterman large American fighting knife has not been cleaned or tampered with in any way, 100% original “as is” condition. These are the actual photos; spent brass is not included with the lot. We a few more American WW2 era combat knives, as well as several scarce WW1 and WW2 fighting daggers and trench knives available for sale – please take a look in our Militaria section.
