US Navy M1882 Flare Pistol in great overall condition, considering the age. All-brass construction, barrel locks well, original wood grips intact, mechanically excellent. Only 100 made – VERY rare type.
Super-rare American Model 1882 Flare Pistol. When introduced, it was a technological break-through as it was the first ever flare pistol to rapidly shoot flares out standardized paper-case flare cartridges. The US Army Lt. Edward Very designed these flares, so these early signal pistols/flare guns are often referred to as “Very Pistols”. Overall, only 100 of Model 1882 signal pistols were made – a scarce type and nearly impossible to find in such a good and operable condition.
All parts seem to be original, including the walnut grips; original brass lanyard ring is also intact – rare as such as most got broken or filed-off. The “swivel” barrel is about 4″ / 10.2 cm long; the spur trigger assembly has a bit of surface rust but nothing major. No pitting or dents on the barrel; the bore is clean; all brass parts have a rich original golden-honey patina throughout – this old timer hasn’t been cleaned in many decades. Original walnut grips are in very good condition overall – with no cracks or large chips, mostly just regular wear an tear expected from the 140-year old service piece. Great overall condition, considering the age; this flare pistol is used and mechanically excellent. There used to be original marking on the right side of the frame which read ORD. DEP. U.S.N. YW / 1884 / “anchor” USN acceptance mark / JAH. The “anchor” and remnants of some letters are still visible but some idiot with a file had removed pretty much everything else. No clue on why or when this was done but the scars have a nice and even patina over them so must’ve happened quite a while ago.
This type is never to be tried with modern flares ammo – these flare guns were designed only for shooting low-pressure black powder flare cartridges and are likely going to disintegrate taking off your some of your fingers if tried with modern ammo. Never try this at home kids, that would be very dangerous! Not cleaned or tempered with; scarce in such authentic condition – a lot of these flare guns have been polished or cleaned to a semi-white condition. This specimen is in much-better than average condition for the type and mechanically excellent – VERY rare as such. This original US Navy M1882 Flare Pistol will be a great addition to any collection.
This rare original US Navy M1882 Flare Pistol-flare gun is not a “firearm” under US law and needs no FFL to transfer or own; this post-Civil War era flare gun is obsolete; its spare parts and flares are no longer made.
