Description

US M1909 Hospital Corps Bolo Knife – scarce WW1 era type in unaltered, original condition. Made by Springfield Armory in 1910; rare this nice.

Original World War I era Model 1909 Hospital Corps Bolo in very good overall condition; manufactured in 1910 by SPRINGFIELD ARMORY. The M1909 Bolo was the purpose-built designed jungle tool to aid US soldiers deal with thick foliage that they had previously found themselves in during campaigns in Cuba and in the Philippines. Although much larger than a typical utility knife of the era, M1909 was designed to be carried as a belt knife. Nicely curved ergonomic handle wielded a great control over the large up-swept “scimitar style” blade. In my humble opinion, M1909 Bolo was the most beautifully designed standard issue edged weapon for the US military ever made. Production started in 1909 at the Springfield Armory. Plumb and Collins picked up the extra production with the onset of WW1. In spite of varying production estimates M1909 Bolo is fairly scarce. With the majority of M1909s lost to a heavy field use and combat during the two World Wars M1909 became a highly though-after Americana collectible.

This M1909 is about 19-5/8” / 49.2 cm overall; the blade is about 13-7/8” / 35.3 cm, about 2-1/4” / 5.7 cm at the widest point, and 6 mm thick in the middle. Ricasso is stamped with SA / flaming bomb / 1910 on one side and with U.S. / 9585 serial number on the other. The blade does not appear to be re-sharpened but it has a few tiny edge nicks on the “curve”; a few light surface rust spots are noted for accuracy (cleanable). There is no scabbard. The handle still has original walnut handle scales with 3 brass pins. There are a couple of thin cracks at the pommel, but the handle scales are nice and tight. Round bronze butt cup is intact; extra-wide iron guard is solid; all parts are tight with no play; scarce this nice and complete.

Most of these M1909 Bolos were used as intended during the war and are usually in pretty rough shape. This US M1909 Hospital Corps Bolo Knife had seen some field use, but the overall condition is much better than average for the type; it will make a great addition to any collection.

This original WW1 era US M1909 Hospital Corps Bolo Knife has not been cleaned or tampered with in any way, 100% original condition. These are the actual photos. Buyers must be 18 years of age or older to purchase.
