1500-1800th Laos and Thailand silver TIGER TONGUE ingot monetary unit. Old poured silver bar; weights 3.085 oz / 172.5 gm. NOT a low-grade bronze-silver alloy; scarce as most were chopped-up or melted-down.
Scarce ancient “Tiger Tongue” poured silver ingot, also called “Lat money” from the ancient Lan Chang Kingdom in South-East Asia; circa 1500th-1800th. Lan Chang was covering the area that is Thailand and Laos now. Tiger Tongue monetary units originated in the 16th century. In 1707, the Kingdom of Lan Chang divided into the two kingdoms of Luang Prabang and Vientiane which also adopted the Lat currency and continued use such ingots in trade and commerce till the end of the 19th century. In the 20th century most of these heavy silver bars were chopped-up for trade or melted down; these are getting impossible to find, especially in unaltered original condition.
This attractive specimen is about 4-5/7″ / 11.7 cm long, 7/8″ / 22 mm wide at the widest point and about 6.5 mm thick with several “serpent” assay punches on the top side. Great looking silver bar; the pour is nice and even without blemishes or depressions. This Lat “money bar” weights 3.42 oz / 97 grams (verified). This is a real higher-grade silver “Tiger Tongue” Lat, not one of the low-grade bronze-silver alloy bars typically offered for sale. The ingot is in excellent overall condition with attractive dark-gray patina throughout. The surface has a nice smooth “as made” texture with no typical large dings or chop marks.
