Description

Spanish-American War Collins 1005 Machete – early Type 1 with green horn handle type, original metal-tipped leather scabbard. Scarce type in hard-to-find UNUSED condition; rare this nice and complete.

Scarce original Type 1 “green horn handle” huge US Army sidearm designated as “Machete Bolo Type” in the old army manuals. Reportedly issued from 1890th and used in the Spanish-American War, in WW1 and well into the 1920th. This exact type is illustrated on page 6 of the U.S. MILITARY KNIVES (Book Two) by M.H. Cole – a well-established expert an author of many books on the subject of US military edged weapons (see the page’s scan attached). This specimen is a rare Type 1 Bolo with early green horn handles (later specimens had cocobolo grips). The blade is marked Collins & Co. /  Hartford / No. 1005.

This machete is in rare practically unused condition – no contact marks on blade’s edge or spine; original tip is intact; the edge has not been cleaned or re-sharpened. Incredibly, the blade still has parts of the original Collins & Co. sticker attached on ricasso – VERY rare as such. Some minor surface rust at the tip is noted for accuracy (cleanable). Original green horn scales with 4 brass rivets handle; all handle parts are tight with no play. This big boy is about 19-3/4 / 50.2 cm overall; the blade is about 14-7/8″ / 37.9 cm. The scabbard is in excellent condition overall, considering the age – no dings on the brass throat or the tip; original belt loop is not damaged. The leather is relatively soft still; all original stitching is intact. Overall, this original Spanish-American War Collins 1005 Machete is in excellent practically unused condition. A desirable and highly collectible type; this type rare this nice and complete.

This scarce “green horn” Spanish-American War Collins 1005 Machete has not been cleaned or tampered with in any way it’s in 100% original “as purchased” condition; these are the actual photos.
