Smith Wesson 6030 Survival Bowie hunter-skinner knife, original leather sheath, box. Made in the US in 1975; rare unused in original retail packaging.
Large vintage US-made Smith & Wesson model 6030 Survival Bowie knife with a hollow “gear storage” handle; proudly made in 1975 in the US. Scarce US-made 1970th model in rare unused condition. Designed by the famous Knifemakers Guild founding member late Walter “Blackie” Collins for S&W. Survival Bowies were forged from a modified 440 series stainless alloy; a total of 47 (!!) operations had to be performed on the blade before fitting it to the handle. In fact, the amount of work necessary to complete these knives caused S&W to fall behind on the deliveries to the retailers.
This is a superb full-size Hunter/Survival knife of excellent overall quality; 1st generation issue; low serial number 6951. The knife is about 10-1/8″ / 25.8 cm overall; mirror-polished forged 440 stainless steel blade is about 5-1/2″ / 14 cm; it’s stamped SMITH & WESSON on the spine. The blade is razor-sharp; the tip is intact. Moisture-resistant Wessonwood hollow handle with an extra-wide polished bronze guard and a secure bronze screw-on butt cap. The butt cap sits too tight; I was unable to unscrew it. The handle is designed to safely hold your survival gear; all parts are tight with no play. The knife comes with original S&W black leather sheath, also unused.
