Danzig was established circa 900 AD; a number of European countries had claimed it since. During several periods of its history, Danzig was a free city-port, the last time from 1919 to 1939 – then officially part of Poland. Danzig was taken over by Nazi Germany in 1939. It was Danzig where the first shots of World War II were fired. Early in the morning on September 1st, 1939, German battleship Schleswig-Holstein began bombardment of the Polish positions at Westerplatte (a small peninsula in the city’s harbor). Outnumbered almost 1 to 10 and lacking heavy weapons, Polish defenders at Westerplatte resisted the German army offensive for over a week until they finally ran out of ammunition. Lots of history there. Following the end of WW2 the city was renamed Gdansk; the city part of Poland once again.
