John Nelson Cooper dagger, classic brown micarta/bronze fittings handle made circa 1968-1969 (one-year type logo). Rare type in excellent condition, considering the age.
Excellent quality vintage Skinner handmade by John Nelson Cooper – a great find! John N. Cooper (1906-1987) was one of the founding members of the American Knifemakers’ Guild and one of the greatest American knifemakers of all time. Cooper’s early customs are especially hard to find. This skinner was made in the classic vintage John Cooper style – hand finished blade with the classic brown micarta and brazed bronze guard handle. Simple one-year type “square font” COOPER stamp on ricasso -Cooper used this logo for less than one year in 1968-1969. The handle is brown micata with brazed bronze bolster, brass spacers, and a solid bronze pommel. Nice original honey-golden patina on the bronze; metal surfaces have not been cleaned and/or re-polished.
This John Nelson Cooper dagger is only slightly used; it’s in excellent overall condition; the blade is razor-sharp still; the tip is intact. The handle is well-fitted and provides a very comfortable grip; all parts are solid with no play. The knife is about 9-1/8″ / 23.2 cm overall; the blade is about 5-1/4″ / 13.2 cm. There is no sheath. Very interesting and certainly one-of-the-kind custom Cooper hunter-skinner in the original sheath – this rare knife will make a great addition to any collection.
