John Nelson Cooper big belly skinner knife, classic brown micarta and bronze fittings handle, original leather sheath. Rare handmade 1960th-1970th vintage
Excellent quality vintage Skinner handmade by John Nelson Cooper with original leather sheath included – a great find! John N. Cooper (1906-1987) was one of the founding members of the American Knifemakers’ Guild and one of the greatest American knifemakers of all time; his early customs are especially hard to find. This skinner was made in the classic vintage John Cooper style – hand finished “big belly” skinning blade with the classic “Cooper eagle” on one side. The handle is brown micata with brazed bronze bolster, brass spacers, and a solid bronze pommel. Nice original honey-golden patina on the bronze; metal surfaces have not been cleaned and/or re-polished.
The knife is slightly used, but it’s in excellent overall condition; the blade is razor-sharp still; the tip is intact. The handle is well-fitted and provides a very comfortable grip; all parts are solid with no play. The knife is about 7-3/5″ / 18.7 cm overall; the blade is about 3-1/4″ / 8.3 cm. The knife comes with original custom-made brown lack leather sheath in great overall condition. All original stitching is intact; the leather is soft and supple. Very interesting and certainly one-of-the-kind custom John Nelson Cooper dagger/boot knife and original leather sheath – this rare knife will make a great addition to any collection.
This rare handmade John Nelson Cooper dagger is part of a small collection of vintage daggers I’ve recently purchased. There is one “Cooper” dagger available for sale, plus a huge and possibly unique “Cooper” throwing knife. Also, I have a small but very interesting collection of various edged WW1 and WW2 era weapons available for sale. Don’t forget to check out our Militaria section for other WW1 and WW2 era combat knives, including German WW1 era trench knives, vintage USAF WW2 Pilot Knives and a couple of rare WW2 “OSS Drop” knives we offer for sale.
