Description

Germany WW1 M1898 Butcher bayonet (Seitengewehr M1898/05) for Gewehr 98 rifle; made by Ferdinand Schleuterman Metallsägenfabrik in Remscheid; original metal scabbard included. Scarce type in very good overall condition, considering the age.

An excellent quality original WW1 era M1898/05 Bayonet (Seitengewehr) specimen manufactured by Ferdinand Schleuterman Metallsägenfabrik in Remscheid, Prussian Rhine Province. This  bayonet version is known as n/A (neuer Art = newer model) because it lacks the first pattern’s vestigial muzzle ring and it has a flashguard on the back of the handle’s spine. The M1898/05 was intended for use on the standard-issue Gewehr 98 Mauser rifle of the Imperial German Army. This type has a blade with a distinct bulge toward the point – the M1895 was initially intended for artillerymen and engineers as a chopping tool, as well as a weapon. Because of its shape, the Allies called this type a “butcher blade bayonet”, or simply a “butcher”.

This specimen is in very good shape overall: original grooved wood grips are intact, no typical dings/contact marks on the pommel or the guard; the tip is a bit rounded. All parts are solid with no play; bayonet lock is 100% functional. Ricasso is stamped Schleuterman / Remscheid. The blade is also dated 17 on the blade’s spine, along with a proof mark of a Crown/W (for Kaiser Wilhelm II). The pommel is marked with the royal crown acceptance mark as well. The bayonet is abou7 19-3/4″ / 50.2 cm overall; the blade is about 14-1/2″ / 36.8 cm. Original steel scabbard is in great  condition as well – not cleaned or painted; about 40% of the original finish remaining; the frog stud is intact. A couple of typical minor dents are noted for accuracy.

Over 100 years after the Great War had finally ended, this original Germany WW1 M1898 Butcher bayonet / M1898/05 Seitengewehr specimen is in 100% serviceable condition still; this type is scarce this nice and complete. Don’t miss your chance to add it to your collection!
