Post-WW1 German “hardship years” era large 50 Million Marks notgeld coin issued by Westphalia state in 1923. Very attractive specimen in about uncirculated condition; a few minor rim nicks are noted for accuracy. Nicely toned large coin; about 45 mm in diameter; weights about 31.8 grams; plain rim; this is the more desirable gilt bronze alloy type. Very attractive specimen with original “honey gold” patina throughout and some of the original mint luster remaining. “Notgeld” literally means “emergency money”; many German states and even cities had to issue this type of substitute money to compensate the shortage of the regular coins and banknotes.
