Description

Germany Karl Goetz 1928 Europe-America flight silver medal (K-393) toned uncirculated; rare early aviation commemorative, guaranteed to be 100% authentic.

Rare Karl Goetz commemorative silver medal struck in 1928 to mark the 1st Europe-to-America airplane flight; Kienast medal reference #393. The 1928 Ireland-to-North America flight was a major achievement at the time. The aircraft was Junkers model W33 named Bremen; it was piloted by German pilots Baron Von Hunefeld and Hermann Kohl, Irish Major James M. Fitzmaurice was the navigator. The crew had to navigate most of the flight with nothing but a few rudimentary instruments. Eventually, the plane made it to the Canadian territory where it crash-landed in the bog; the crew survived but the plane was damaged and had to be abandoned on site (it has been restored and placed in a museum since).

Only the Germans are noted on the medal (Goetz was quite a nationalistic prick) – Von Hunefeld and Hermann Kohl are depicted on the obverse; a fairly accurate portrayal of Junkers W33 Bremen is depicted flying over ocean waves on the reverse. An excellent “antique mate” finish specimen with original light-gray patina; a rare type.  The medal is about 36 mm in diameter; 20 grams; inscription on the rim reads BAYER HAUPTMUNZAMT FEINSILBER (Bavarian State Mint Fine Silver in German). Early aviation medals are very collectible and highly though-after by many collectors. A scarce “aviation type” medal by the famous German medalist in excellent overall condition; don’t miss your chance to add it to your collection!

Karl Goetz was born in Augsburg, Germany and studied in Leipzig, Berlin, Dusseldorf, Utrecht, Le Locle (Switzerland), and in Paris. With the start of WW1 Karl Goetz became an artist known around the world for his 1914-1923 satirical medals. Overall, Goetz created about 180 satirical medals and close to 800 medals overall; all are very collectible and highly prized today. He also designed a series of pattern coins, tokens, and medals for the German Empire, the Weimar Republic, and the Third Reich Germany. Karl Goetz survived WW2 and died in his native Munich in 1950.

This rare original Germany Karl Goetz 1928 Europe-America flight silver medal is not a later reproduction or a copy; it is guaranteed to be 100% authentic or your money back. Not cleaned; these are the actual photos. Don’t miss your chance to add this attractive vintage airship memorabilia to your collection!
