Description

Germany Karl Goetz 1915 Warsaw capture bronze medal -Fieldmarshal Prince Leopold (Kienast 161). Large 83 mm medal from an old collection in excellent overall condition – VERY rare this nice.

Rare early World War I Karl Goetz large cast bronze medal issued in 1915 in commemoration of the WW1 August 4-5, 1915, Battle of Warsaw (Kienast reference #161), a scarce type. In August 1915 General Field Marshal Prince Leopold had won a decisive battle against the Imperial Russian army and captured the Polish capital city of Warsaw (the German lion is climbing the city walls with the Warsaw coat of arms in the date above).

The medal retained its original mate finish; it is in pretty much “as-made” condition with attractive chocolate-brown patina. No typical rim nicks, dings or dark/green spots on the surface – VERY rare this nice. The medal weighs about 147.6 grams, about 83.2 mm in diameter; plain rim. The medal is still in the original J. SCHULMAN NIMISMATE / AMSTERDAM paper envelope that looks to be over 50 years old.

Karl Goetz was born in Augsburg, Germany and studied in Leipzig, Berlin, Dusseldorf, Utrecht, Le Locle (Switzerland), and in Paris. With the start of WWI Karl Goetz became an artist known around the world for his 1914-1923 satirical medals. Overall, Goetz created about 180 satirical medals and close to 800 medals overall; all are very collectible and highly prized today. He also designed a series of pattern coins, tokens, and medals for the German Empire, the Weimar Republic, and the Third Reich Germany. Karl Goetz survived WW2 and died in his native Munich in 1950.
