Case XX WW2 V44 survival knife – part of the aircrew “bail-out” kit, hand-made “theater” leather scabbard included – rare type.
Scarce WW2 era US Air Force V44 pilot survival/fighting knife manufactured by Case Cutlery in Bradford, PA during the war. The scabbard is not original to the knife and appears to be an indigenous-made hand-sawn replacement of great overall quality. Thes V44 model was issued to the USAF and some Commonwealth aircrews as part of their survival kit during the War. It was an all-purpose knife for fighting and survival in case of a bail-out. This exact type is illustrated on pages 110-111 of KNIVES OF THE UNITED STATES MILITARY WORLD WAR II book by Michael W Silvey – a well-established expert an author of many books on the subject of US military edged weapons (see the book’s scans in the photos).
This specimen has been obviously used in the field – the blade has some pitting that was later buffed-out; some light surface rust is still present (cleanable). The edge has been re-sharpened and it’s razor-sharp still; the tip is intact. No typical dings marks the blade’s spine or the bronze guard – better than the average condition for the type. Ricasso is stamped CASE XX; solid cast bronze “double-ball” cross-guard is unmarked. The black plastic handle with 3 large bronze rivets is in excellent overall condition, considering the age; a few light contact marks on the pommel are noted for accuracy. All parts are tight with no play. This huge knife is about 14″ / 35.5 cm overall; the blade is about 9-1/8″ / 23.2 cm long. The “jungle” type replacement leather scabbard is in very good condition, considering the age. The front is super-embossed with a simple border pattern; I see no other markings anywhere else. The leather is still soft, all original stitching is intact. The knife is a little loose in the scabbard, but fits nicely overall; it is in 100% serviceable condition even now. These huge WW2 era V44 survival knives are getting very hard to find nowadays. This Case XX WW2 V44 survival knife /fighting Bowie and its one-of-a-kind hand-made leather scabbard will be a welcome addition to any collection.
