Australian WW2 GREGSTEEL fighting knife-made in Collingwood (Melbourne). This type was issued to the American servicemen – “US 1944” stamp on ricasso. VERY hard to find these days.
Rare WW2 era fighting knife made circa 1944 for the American servicemen by Gregory Steel Products (GREGSTEEL logo on the blade) in Collingwood (Melbourne), Australia – not a common WW2 era fighting knife, especially in decent condition with original wood handle intact. This exact type is illustrated on pages 55-56 of the KNIVES OF THE UNITED STATES MILITARY WORLD WAR II book by Michael W Silvey – a well-established expert an author of many books on the subject of US military edged weapons (see the book’s page scan attached).
This fighting knife is in very good overall condition – no edge nicks or hammer marks on the spine; the blade is lightly re-sharpened; the tip is intact. Minor pitting at the base of the blade and on the guard is noted for accuracy, Sharp original manufacturing stamp GREGSTEEL is boldly struck at ricasso; secondary weakly struck US 1944 stamp is right below it. Original wood handle scales with 3 iron pins and wide iron guard; all parts are solid with no play; great shape overall, considering the age. Saber-point carbon steel blade is razor-sharp still, including the upper “false” edge. This fighting knife is about 11″ / 28 cm overall; the blade is about 5-7/8″ / 15 cm long; there is no scabbard.
Almost 80 years after it was made this rare Australian WW2 GREGSTEEL fighting knife is 100% serviceable and ready for action. This type is hard to find in any condition these days – don’t miss your chance to add it to your collection!
