Australia WW2 Aussie fighting knife, orig leather scabbard included. Solid cast aluminum handle, unmarked blade, correct original “long keeper” sheath. VERY rare this nice and complete.
Rare WW2 era unmarked Aussie fighter made during the war for the Australian armend forces. Similar-looking, but blade-marked fighter with cast-aluminum handles were manufactured by AKE in New Zealand. This exact type is illustrated on page 64 of the KNIVES OF THE UNITED STATES MILITARY WORLD WAR II book by Michael W Silvey. Some collectors and experts disagree with Silvey and identify this entire type as made in New Zealand. Regardless of its actual point of origin, this WW2 era fighting knife type is quite rare, especially in better grades and with original leather scabbard intact. Most of the surviving specimens are in private collections and rarely come up for sale.
This fighting knife is in much better than average condition for the type: the “skull crusher” at the base of the handle is undamaged; the 4-point bow shows just a few light contact marks; the blade has been lightly re-sharpened. High-carbon steel blade has some surface rust and a bit of pitting on one side, but nothing major. The dual-edge spear-point blade is razor-sharp still; the tip is intact. No markings on the blade or the handle; the scabbard is unmarked as well. The die-cast solid aluminum handle is in excellent overall condition, considering the age; a few light contact marks here and there are noted for accuracy. This fighting knife is about 11″ / 28 cm overall; the blade is about 6-1/4″ / 16 cm long; the blade is tight with no play. Original leather scabbard is in excellent shape, considering the age and the typical exposure to the elements in the tropical climate. All original brass rivets and stitching are intact; the keeper (which is the weakest point in all of these scabbards) is a bit dry but it is intact and original to the scabbard.
Almost 80 years after it was made this rare Australia WW2 fighting knife is in 100% serviceable still. This type is hard to find in any condition these days, especially in such well-preserved condition – don’t miss your chance to add it to your collection
