Antique JOSEPH RODGERS SONS Sheffield spear point blade Bowie knife with genuine stag handle; made circa 1860-1890. Solid full-tang construction, German silver T-guard and engraveble handle medallion; rare type.
An antique Bowie made circa 1860-1890 by Joseph Rodgers & Sons in Sheffield, England. The company’s famous ✱ ✢ trademark (a star and a simple cross) was first used as early as 1682. A lot of these antique British Bowies were marketed to the Union solders during the Civil War and beyond. These handy knives were very popular with the troops, as evident from the numerous Civil War era photos of solders posing with the Bowies of various shapes and sizes. This very attractive spear-point blade Bowie is about 11-1/4” / 28.6 cm overall; the blade is about 6-3/4” / 17. cm long; full-tang construction. There is some pitting on ricasso, but the stamp is still readable: V♚R / JOSEPH RODGERS & SONS / No 6 NORFOLK STREET / SHEFFIELD / ✱ ✢ . The blade has been cleaned and polished – looks like an old cleaning; the steel has developed an attractive light-gray patina since. The blade is very sharp still; the tip is intact. Light pitting on the spine and most of the blade is consistent with age; blade’s edge is nice and even without the typical nicks or dings.
Original stag handle scales with engravable German silver oval medallion pinned on one side. An unusually thick solid German silver T-cross guard is about 5.3 mm thick and 2-3/16” / 5.5 cm wide. Stag scales have a couple of minor age-related crack but are in great shape overall, considering the age. All handle parts are tight with zero movement. There is no sheath. This antique JOSEPH RODGERS SONS Sheffield spear point blade Bowie knife is in very good overall condition, considering the age. Most of the surviving antique “classic” Bowies are in private collections and rarely come up for sale; don’t miss your chance to add this good-looking classic Bowie to your collection!
