Description

American 1912 M1905 bayonet, bright 16″ blade, original WW2-issue M3 composition scabbard marked “USN MK1” included. Excellent overall condition, considering the age; VERY rare this nice.

Hard to find pre-WW1 era manufacture/WW2 service issue US M1905 bayonet dated 1912 with original walnut wood grips, uncut original “bright finish” 16″ blade, and early WW2 issue M3 composition scabbard. This specimen was originally manufactured in 1912 by the legendary Springfield Armory in Springfield, Massachusets: SA / “flaming bomb” / 1912 date stamp on the ricasso on one side; US and serial number 523505 on the other.  A scarce type in general – most of the original M1905s were cut-down soon after the US had entered World War 2 and they were re-furbished as the 10″-blade M1/M1942 “short” bayonet pattern. Also, Springfield Armory produced relatively few M1905 bayonets in this year, comparing to other pre-WW1 years: according to SA production data, only 36,507 M1905s were made in 1912 calendar year.

This is a well-made bayonet with the pre-WW1 “bright” finish blade. This specimen is slightly used, but it is in much better than average condition for the type: blade has not been re-sharpened; the very end of the tip is a bit pitted, but nothing dramatic; no typical dings or nicks on the pommel. Original walnut grips are solid with no play; bayonet release mechanism is tight and 100% functional; a few minor contact marks on the grips are noted for accuracy. The bayonet is about 20-1/2″ / 52 cm overall; the blade is about 16″ / 40.7 cm long.

Original M3 composition scabbard is in excellent overall condition, considering the age –  original paint finish is almost 100% intact; no rust on the metal parts.  Steel throat is stamped USN / MK1; the underside plate is marked B3/0N. During the war the US War Department had instructed the manufactures “to waste nothing”, so they used whatever material was suitable during production, including the unused quantity of scabbard parts intended for the discontinued USN MK1 Utility Knife. A desirable and highly collectible WW1/WW2 era M1905 bayonet in unaltered original condition- don’t miss your chance to add it to your collection!

This rare pre-WW1 manufacture, WW2 era-issue American 1912 M1905 bayonet and its original M3 composition scabbard have not been cleaned or tampered with in any way, 100% original condition; these are the actual photos.
